Bernard Muchere, the auditor who uncovered Health ministry scandal

Bernard Muchere, an internal auditor at the National Treasury, was seconded to the ministry in June to start investigations whose leaked preliminary report has prompted a national outrage.
He is no stranger to controversy. He conducted a value-for-money audit for construction of the Ronald Ngala Utalii College in the 2014/15 financial year and came up with a damning report. The audit report found out the cost of the project had been inflated by about Sh8.5 billion from the initial Sh1.9 billion.
“The highly inflated RNUC project (Sh10.4 billion) omitted the three or four star application hotel (estimated at a cost of Sh616 million) which was part of the approved KUC, Coast branch project,” the report said.
Also, the audit indicted the National Treasury and State Department of Commerce and Tourism for allocating and releasing funds to Catering and Tourism Development levy trustees and Ronald Ngala Utalii College.
These two institutions do not exist in law,” read the report that is now the basis of an investigation by the National Assembly’s Public Investment Committee.
The audit also noted flouting of Government financial regulations to procure the consortium of consultants created a loophole whereby a contract sum was “highly inflated to approximately Sh1.4 billion”.
Muchere has worked in the public service for 32 years, 26 as an auditor carrying out forensic audits in various ministries and state departments.
Recently, he trained 30 DCI officers on fraud examination. In other audits, he reported that procurement processes should not be initiated without confirmation of availability of sufficient funds.
Between 2008 and 2011, he was the auditor in charge of the National Youth Service. He has also worked in the Public Works, Tourism and Industrialisation ministries as well as other stations in the former districts.

Pope heads to Sweden to commemorate Martin Luther

It led to a violent, often political schism throughout Europe and Christianity, prompting among other things the 30 Years' War, the destruction of English monasteries, and the burning of numerous "heretics" on both sides.
Francis is traveling to the southern Swedish city of Lund, where the Lutheran World Federation was founded in 1947, for a joint service with Lutherans to launch Reformation commemorations that will continue throughout the world next year.
On Monday Francis and Lutheran leaders will hold an ecumenical prayer service in Lund's Lutheran cathedral and another inter-religious event in nearby Malmo.

Catholics believe their Church has conceded too much to Lutherans and should not be taking part in any event that praises Luther.
Theological dialogue between Roman Catholics and Lutherans began 50 years ago but Catholics and Lutherans are still officially not allowed to take communion at each other's services.
When he visited Rome's Lutheran church last year, traditionalists attacked Francis for suggesting in answer to a question that a Lutheran woman married to a Catholic man could decide for herself in good conscience if she could take communion in her husband's church.
They also resented that a joint statement when the event was announced in June said the common prayer would "express the gifts of the Reformation".

Pope Francis has called Luther "an intelligent man" who was rightly upset by the corruption, worldliness, greed and lust for power that existed in the Catholic Church at the time.

The deep resentment and rifts left by the Reformation began easing after the 1962-1965 Second Vatican Council urged dialogue with other Christians in the hopes of one day achieving reunion. Francis has said he wants commemorations of the start of the Reformation to take part in a spirit of humility on both sides. Although there are still doctrinal disputes he has said both Churches can work jointly on issues such as alleviating poverty and helping migrants and refugees

Diamond, Ali Kiba beef rages on but their managers ‘crushing on each other’

The long running tiff between Bongo Flava superstars Diamond and Ali Kiba has time and again offered fans really juicy gossip.
The most recent installment was Ali Kiba alleging that Diamond Platnumz’s manager Sallam Sharaff switched off his microphone at the Mombasa Rocks Festival and the manager responded saying Ali Kiba had a bad show and was looking for someone to blame.
So then it would only seem natural that their respective managers don’t get along, right? Wrong.
Last week, Diamond’s manager posted a photo of Ali Kiba’s manager Seven Mosha on Instagram and captioned it “#WCW” (Woman Crush Wednesday) with a blushing emoji.
While some people thought he was stirring the pot, others genuinely believed it meant they are totally cool with each other.

Bride divorced after two hours for sharing wedding photos on social media

A woman in the male dominated Middle East Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was divorced just after two hours for using social media.
A groom in Saudi Arabia filed for divorce after realizing his wife had shared wedding pictures with her friends on Snapchat, an image messaging mobile app, according to the British Daily Mail on Monday.
Not sharing pictures or videos of the ceremony was a binding clause in the marriage contract.
“Regretfully, my sister did not honor the pledge and used Snapchat to share pictures from the wedding ceremony with her female friends, resulting in the shocking decision by the groom to cancel their marriage and call for a divorce,” said a brother of the bride.
REASON FOR DIVORCE
The divorce created a rift between the families. The bride’s family argued that the agreement was unfair, while the groom’s side claimed he had the right to make the decision.
Mobile use has often been a reason for divorce in Saudi Arabia.
Earlier this year, in the city of Jeddah, a newlywed Saudi man divorced his wife after failing to get her attention in a hotel room – she was too busy texting friends.
“When he asked her if her friends were more important than he was, the bride answered that they were,” a relative of the groom said.

Man to rot in jail for life for defiling minor, infecting her with HIV virus

A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for defiling an eight-year-old girl and intentionally infecting  her with HIV virus in Eldoret town.
Jackson Kones Nangiro was accused that on January 3, 2016 at Vumilia ‘A’ village in Eldoret West District within Uasin Gishu County unlawfully and intentionally defiled the minor and infected her with HIV virus.
The accused, who was also charged with indecent act, was released on a bond of Sh100, 000 after pleading not guilty to the offence.

BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT
However, Eldoret Principal Magistrate Charles Obulutsa on Monday ruled that the prosecutor had proved to court beyond reasonable doubt that the accused committed the offence.
“The prosecution has proven beyond reasonable doubt that the accused defiled the girl. The accused has 14 days to make an appeal, ruled Magistrate Obulutsa.
The prosecutor told the court that one of the witnesses found the accused in bed with the girl and alerted neighbours.
The court heard that the accused used to work for the girl’s mother as a farmhand.
After the incident, the girl’s mother noticed her daughter was bleeding profusely from her private parts and had difficulty in walking.
She rushed her to Moi Teaching and Referal Hospital (MTRH) for examination and treatment.

MEDICAL REPORT
The magistrate noted that a doctor’s medical report indicated that the minor had been defiled.
“From the medical reports presented in court said discharge was found and the girl’s hymen was broken, an indication she had been defiled,” the magistrate said in his ruling.
The accused pleaded with the magistrate for leniency saying that he lost his wife some years back and that his three children depend on him.
But the magistrate reminded the accused that his action has damaged a young girl’s future by infecting her with HIV virus and that he does not deserve mercy.

Mudavadi accuses Health CS of trying to cover up graft

Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi has accused Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu of attempting to conceal the truth behind the Sh5 billion scandal at the ministry.
Mr Mudavadi said the plan to hire an external auditor to assess the internal audit is blackmail and a plot for cover-up, which is illegal.
“If it is a fact, as the government has all along insisted that the contentious audit report is a draft subject to verification, then hiring an external auditor to verify the internal auditors report is superfluous.
"In any case, Cabinet Secretary (CS) Cleopa Mailu's claim that no money was stolen do not add up when he still wants to discredit the internal auditors report via an external audit,” he said.
On Sunday, Dr Mailu accused the internal auditor of leaking an incomplete report and said he would hire an independent auditor to verify the corruption claims raised in the report.
However, Mr Mudavadi on Monday said that Kenyans are intelligent and the government in power will not be able to deceive them.
"The Jubilee regime ought to be told in no uncertain terms that their intention is archaic and Kenyans have come of age to know when they are being lied to.
"The intention of an external audit not sanctioned by the Office of the Auditor-General Edward Ouko whose agent is the internal auditor, Mr Bernard Muchere, will not escape the scrutiny of many discerning Kenyans."
The former Deputy Prime Minister said Kenyans deserve accountability from their government and not deception and lies.
“It is obvious to Kenyans that the Jubilee regime holds with contempt the Office of the Auditor-General, despite it being a constitutional office. Only recently they passed unconstitutional amendments in law in a vain attempt to strip the office of its constitutional powers,” he said.
The ANC leader further said that Mr Edward Ouko's office is granted autonomy by the Constitution as delineated in Chapter 15, Article 248 under Section three.
He also said the Office of the Auditor-General is the one supposed to carry out the audit or hire another auditor, but it must explain its inability to perform the exercise.
Hence, he added that the intention by Dr Mailu to seek the services of an external auditor is a "decoy to buy time to clean and to doctor records".

Zimbabwe an Billionaire is taking viewership for his sports channel in kenya

Kwesé Sports, the pan-African sports television company owned by Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa has inked a deal with American TV sports broadcast giant ESPN taking the battle for sports viewership in Kenya and the continent a notch higher. The founder of the telecoms conglomerate Econet set up and rolled out Kwesé Sports, in Kenya and across the continent on mobile, Internet and satellite-based free to air platforms mid this year. Last week, Kwesé said the deal with ESPN would it boost its offering to include NCAA American football and basketball to its existing broadcast rights for the NFL, NHL and the NBA, making it “the home of American sports in Africa.” “Ultimately our goals are the same, to bring fans the best in global sports. The synergies between Kwesé and ESPN allow us to achieve that goal by leveraging our collective ability to deliver premium African and global sports programming to sports fans across Africa. “We look forward to collaborating with ESPN in Africa and providing African sports fans with access to global sports like never before,” said Econet Media chief executive Joseph Hundah. The US sports broadcast behemoth on the other hand said it is banking on the deal to expand its foothold in the African market. “ESPN’s focus around the world is simple: to serve sports fans. This long-term collaboration across television and digital media will do just that -- serve millions of sports fans across Africa with exceptional products, content and coverage,” said ESPN International executive vice president and managing director Russell Wolff. The deal comes into effect in early 2017 with the launch of an ESPN channel in 19.

Uber drivers in U.K. win right to paid time off and minimum wage

Uber drivers in the U.K. won a landmark court case Friday that means they will qualify for the minimum wage, paid time off and other perks.

An employment tribunal in London ruled that the drivers should be considered "workers" rather than self-employed contractors, dealing a major blow to Uber.
"This is a monumental victory that will have a hugely positive impact on over 30,000 drivers in London and across England and Wales and for thousands more in other industries where bogus self-employment is rife," said Maria Ludkin, legal director for the GMB labor union that represented the drivers.
Under U.K. law, they could even claim back pay for the period they've already worked for Uber, said Ed Marchant, an employment lawyer at IBB solicitors.
"From Uber's perspective the substantial additional cost resulting from the judgment means that they are likely to significantly change their business model and/or pass these extra costs onto customers," Marchant said.
Uber said it would appeal against the ruling.
"Tens of thousands of people in London drive with Uber precisely because they want to be self-employed and their own boss. The overwhelming majority of drivers who use the Uber app want to keep the freedom and flexibility of being able to drive when and where they want," said Jo Bertram, the head of Uber U.K.
Marchant said the ruling could benefit others who work in delivery services and other areas of the "gig" economy.
"There is likely to be a spate of related claims from other Uber drivers and those in similar industries arguing that they are workers and entitled to similar benefits," he said.
The GMB said it is already reviewing contracts at other companies

The union said that one of its members, working exclusively for Uber, received £5.03 ($6.45) per hour in August 2015 after costs and fees were taken into account. That is below the national minimum wage.
At the same time, Uber's terms and conditions meant the driver's actions were controlled by the company, so he should have been considered a worker, rather than self employed, the union said.

Uber has faced a string of lawsuits from its drivers across the world. Drivers in the U.S. have launched a class action lawsuit, accusing Uber of misclassifying them as contractors when they're actually treated as employees.
Lawyers for California and Massachusetts drivers in the case reached a tentative $100 million settlement earlier this year that would not change drivers' statuses, but would add certain protections and allow them to solicit tips.

Destiny’s Child’s New Instagram Sparks Reunion Rumors

Beyoncé’s girl group Destiny’s Child has raised fans’ hopes of a reunion after an official Instagram account was launched in the band’s name.
Eagle-eyed social media users noticed the new profile pop up last weekend, but the news of its existence has only now hit headlines after a message on the Independent Women hitmakers’ official Twitter page publicized the Instagram account.

The post, uploaded on Thursday, read, “Destiny’s Child are on @instagram! Follow the girls now: http://www.instagram.com/destinyschild.”
The verified Instagram account has so far only shared images marking various milestones in the band’s stellar career, but its launch has sparked speculation Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams could be planning a special surprise for Destiny’s Child’s 20th anniversary next year.

The group split in 2006, but the ladies have remained close; Rowland and Williams enjoyed a night out together on Monday as they attended the ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards.
At the event, Rowland revealed their red carpet appearance was a last minute decision, as they had been hanging out all day.
“We were actually at my house together, and I was like, ‘Do you want to come with me to this event tonight?'” Kelly told E! News. “And she was like, ‘Yeah!’ So we got dressed and came.”
And although Beyoncé wasn’t in attendance, Rowland and Williams were able to catch up with their longtime pal at a low-key dinner date the night before, much to onlookers’ surprise: “They often look at us sideways, like, ‘Are we really seeing this?’ It’s really cute,” Rowland smiled.
Despite the recent get-togethers and the looming anniversary, Rowland claimed there has been no discussion about a potential Destiny’s Child comeback.
“We haven’t even talked anything about that,” she insisted. “We’ve just been enjoying each other’s company and love and enjoying being women.”

25 people killed in clashes in Central African Republic

Twenty-five people have been killed in clashes in the Central African Republic this week, the United Nations said Saturday.
On Thursday, 15 people were killed in clashes between Muslim Seleka rebels and Christian Anti-balaka militia, near the town of Bambari in the south of the country.
In a separate incident on Friday, 10 people -- including six police officers -- were killed in an ambush, according to the UN mission for the stabilization of the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

Demonstrators on Monday hoisted signs demanding MINUSCA leave the country, saying the mission had failed to maintain stability or protect citizens. Gunfire and looting ensued in several districts of the capital Bangui following the protests.
Meanwhile, MINUSCA called Monday's events a new attempt by armed groups to disturb the peace and undermine elected authorities. The mission denounced what it called a "denigration campaign against peacekeepers."

    Tensions remain high

The situation in the Central African Republic has remained volatile since 2013, when political violence erupted. A coalition of mostly Muslim rebels ousted President Francois Bozize, and Christian and Muslim militias started fighting for control.
Years of deadly violence have fueled a humanitarian crisis, leaving some 2.3 million people -- over half the population -- in dire need of assistance, according to UN figures.
A new government was elected earlier this year, but tensions have remained high.
More than 400,000 people have been displaced within the country and another 467,000 have fled to neighboring countries.

Kenyan woman rescued from Somali pirates

A Kenyan woman who was captured by Somali pirates together with his colleagues while delivering medicine to Somalia has been rescued, reports indicate.
Ms Lois Njoki Weru was seized in November 2014, along with his partner Mr James Gachamba Kuria, while delivering medicine in Somalia.
Mr Kuria was however freed as a result of a raid by Somali security forces last February on a village where the two Kenyans were being held.
One of the Somalia’s leading independent radio, Radio Dalsan, also reported that the Galmudug regional state security agencies rescued the woman from the pirates.
On October 17, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a report that pirate gangs in Somalia were believed to be holding five Kenyans for ransom.
    KENYAN HOSTAGES
The brief reference to the Kenyan captives is included in an 18-page update on Somali piracy presented to the UN Security Council.
He however did not name the Kenyan hostages but added that another Kenyan was the only Somali pirate hostage to have been freed so far in 2016.
The woman was part of the three Kenyans held by the pirates. The two have been identified as Mr George Macharia Mburu and George Macharia Njoki, and were working for a construction company in Mogadishu when they were kidnapped by militia from Habargidir, who are demanding ransom from the family to set them free.
On Saturday, Somali pirates released 26 crew members of an Omani-flagged fishing vessel FV NAHAN 3, which was hijacked south of the Seychelles in March 2012, following negotiations

US ENVOY: Ending corruption was my reason for competing in Nairobi Marathon

The Ambassador of the United States to Kenya, Robert Godec, on Sunday called on the government of Kenyan to end corruption.
The ambassador wants the government to establish strong mechanisms and procedures to firmly deal with perpetrators of corruption.
His remarks come in the wake of revelation of several high level corruption scandals, the latest being the alleged misappropriation of Sh5 billion in the Ministry of Health.
The ambassador was speaking after participating in the 21km race during this year’s Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon saying that he ran for his wife and to end corruption in Kenya.

    CORRUPTION
“I also ran against corruption in Kenya. It is time that everyone in Kenya should stand up and say enough is enough, let’s end corruption so today I ran against corruption in Kenya,” Mr Godec said during an interview with NTV.
“There is a terrible situation with the Health Sector, obviously that needs to be investigated immediately and again those responsible should go to prison,” he added.
His comments comes after the Business Daily, reported a scandal in which the Ministry of Health lost over Sh5 billion.
According to a leaked audit report on the Ministry, which brought to light the scandal, several companies associated with President Kenyatta’s kins and confidants were mentioned.
At the same time, Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu said there was no conflict of interest between the ministry and the people who they are doing business with.

No money has been lost, says Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu as he defends suppliers.

The Health ministry on Sunday fought back against corruption claims within its ranks and defended its suppliers against claims of fraud.
Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu said no money had been lost in his ministry, contrary to claims that about Sh5.2 billion had been paid out to suppliers in dodgy circumstances.
At a press conference in his Nairobi office, Dr Mailu who was with his principal secretary, Dr Nicholas Muraguri — the man believed to be at the centre of the controversy— shifted the blame to the ministry’s internal auditor, whom he accused of leaking an incomplete document.
“We have so far been able to establish that all the expenditure under the audit report has been accounted for.
“It is also vitally important for me to clarify that the report under reference only raised audit queries based on an assertion of unaccounted expenditure, not fraud or theft,” he said.
He added that he would hire an independent auditor to verify claims of corruption and accused financial assessors for “double counting” figures and leaking the findings to the media.

“We have serious concerns as to the quality of the report which is in your possession, and the probity of its methodology and findings. However, it doesn’t negate the concerns raised in there. We affirm that we are committed to internal and external audits as a way to improve our operations.”
The findings in question emerged last week after an internal auditor’s report showed payments to various companies may have been made illegally.
Some of those companies have denied claims that they were favoured in the contracts or that they failed to deliver the goods.
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s sister Nyokabi Kenyatta Muthama and cousin Kathleen Kihanya have been named as beneficiaries of tenders in the ministry.
Sundales International, the company owned by the two, won a Sh41 million tender for supplies to the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority.
    DISABLED AND WOMEN
The directors, whose company is listed among a list of companies described as disadvantaged because they belong to the youth, disabled and women, on Saturday sought to clear themselves of any wrong doing, saying their business was clean.
On Sunday, Dr Mailu said the actual details of how the money was spent was unknown, but refuted criticism that the ministry had given tenders to firms with questions about possible conflict of interest.
“As a country, we have made a lot of strides in ensuring that we create an environment for people to conduct business ... and we have seen efforts in government documents to allow more women, youth and the disabled to do business,” he said.
“A Kenyan is a Kenyan and, therefore, anybody can conduct business with the government as long as there is no conflict of interest. The auditor did not raise the question of conflict of interest in his report. I do not want any Kenyan to feel lesser ... we are encouraging businesses.”
The auditors, on assignment from the Cabinet secretary himself, found that the ministry may have spent money under the Supplementary estimates before the National Assembly could approve it, an issue that Dr Mailu disputed.
It also found out that the ministry had transferred Sh265 million to Co-operative Bank. The bank and the CS, however, said the money was paid in order to obtain Letters of Credit for LifeCare Medics Ltd, a company contracted to supply fortified nutritional supplements.
The ministry defended the move, saying it was seeking to avoid making upfront payments before delivery and assured the company that the money would be paid on delivery of goods.
“The opening of Letters of Credit is a standard and acceptable mode of payment for imported goods, as it is a process that provides the supplier with payment in a form that ensures that the funds are used by the supplier strictly for the service being rendered,” he said

Kenyans can now record TV shows and watch on demand videos

Missing out on favorite TV programme or events like church sermon or wedding has been a big deal to many Kenyans due to lack of opportunity for a replay.
Both local and International companies are now making this a thing of the past and also enabling many Kenyans to catch up with such events live as they happen irrespective of where they are beamed from.
Kenya’s Eziki limited for instance enables one to catch up with church sermon live or replay TV programmes such as news from the comfort of a mobile phone or computer when one wants. “The new technology meets the demand of our consumers who may not have time to watch or attend a particular event, spread of internet gives us the opportunity to play to them such events or programmes on their phones, tablets or computers,” says Santos Okotta, Founder Eziki.
“Through Eziki, an artist or any media organization can create their own exclusive channel where customers get to experience their videos,” he says. The company has partnered with Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, churches among others to live stream most of their events, the live streams are later converted into videos and saved within the platform to allow those who missed out to click and watch at any time on demand.
According to the 2015 edition of The Ericsson Mobility report, 60 per cent of Kenyans surveyed want freedom and flexibility when watching TV and video rather than following a schedule.
In addition to this, 45 per cent of Kenyans stated that they were satisfied with the video and streaming content while another 49 per cent said they were happy with the speed of downloading television and video content.
The trend has motivated global companies such as NetFlix and South Africa’s ShowMax to venture into video on demand services in Kenya.
ShowMax, a subscription video on demand service, has launched a two-tier service for watching TV shows and movies via the internet enabled devices.
It features local favourites such as Real Househelps of Kawangware, Churchill Live, Auntie Boss, and Kona, as well as popular series and movies from Hollywood like Mr Robot, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Blue Bloods, and The Good Wife.
Subscribers can choose from a number of different download video quality levels. Using the most data-efficient setting, downloading a 20-minute TV show will use approximately 80 MB. This means that a 7.5 GB data bundle would be enough for more than 90 episodes.
Speaking about the consumer uptake of video on demand services, ShowMax CEO John Kotsaftis said: “Kenya has all the right ingredients: tech-savvy consumers, rapidly expanding internet connectivity, and an appetite for quality TV shows and movies. So why hasn’t internet TV taken off yet?
“It doesn’t matter how good your service is if you don’t first solve the data challenge for customers, particularly for the majority of people who rely on mobile internet. That’s why we designed data-saving features and the ability to download content into ShowMax from the outset. With these features and a strong focus on local content, we think ShowMax will finally crack the internet TV model in Kenya.”

    The Future of Sports Betting

When Dr. Christopher Hunt first began working at the University of Sydney Gambling Treatment Clinic in Australia, he recalls seeing "one or two" troubled sports bettors every six months.
Today, after what he calls the "gamblization" of sports in Australia, Hunt says sports bettors make up one-third of the clinic's patients.
If sports betting is legalized, will the United States be headed for a future with increased addiction potentially spurned by a rampant barrage of gambling advertising? Proponents point to the expected economic benefits and increased game-integrity protection of legalization. Opponents say those perceived pluses won't outweigh the pitfalls.
"For the two-thirds-plus of Americans who rarely or never engage in commercial gambling, the change will be negative," said Michael K. Fagan, a former federal prosecutor and current adjunct professor at Washington University School of Law. "Anyone fairly and comprehensively evaluating the unbiased, independent academic, health-care and economic evidence readily finds that it weighs in favor of continuing prohibitions on commercial sports gambling."
Australia, a country which legalized sports betting around the turn of the century, is a prime example of what America wants to avoid.
Widespread legalization of online sports betting arrived in Australia in 2001, but even in a culture with a longtime acceptance of gambling as a form of entertainment, it didn't explode onto the market.

In the beginning, mom-and-pop bookmakers competed against the government-owned sports book TAB. Teams entered standard sponsorship deals with betting operators, and sports commentators casually began referencing odds during broadcasts. Overall, though, the impact of legalization was minimal and sports betting was looked at as a niche product with niche problems. But trouble loomed.
Around 2009, Australians began to notice a dramatic shift in the atmosphere surrounding sports and how the games were presented by the media. International bookmaking companies, with much larger marketing budgets, began arriving on the scene. Soon, advertising for betting could be found near schools and on public transportation. The gambling talk during game broadcasts went from subtle to constant, with commercials from sports books bleeding into the media coverage. At one point, one of Australia's biggest bookies was a regular in the broadcast booth.
"All of a sudden, it was like you couldn't talk about sports without making reference to what the odds were, what the prices were, whether they thought this bet was value or this bet was value," said Hunt, a clinical psychologist. "It was what we came to call the 'gamblization' of sport."
It was similar to what you were seeing [in the U.S.] with the [daily] fantasy advertising," Gainsbury said. "Sports events are just now completely dominated by sports betting advertising. All throughout the sporting events you're seeing these complete bombardments of advertising for betting. And community members are now saying, 'Hey, my kids are watching this.' Gambling was supposed to be put be off to the corner and now it's front and center."
The United Kingdom, home to one of the most mature legal sports betting markets in the world, took steps over the past decade to combat socially irresponsible gambling advertising. Betting and gaming companies in the U.K. have been permitted to advertise across all media since 2007, under strict guidelines monitored by the Advertising Standards Authority. The regulations require that advertisements for gambling must not "portray, condone or encourage behavior that is socially irresponsible or could lead to financial, social or emotional harm." Ads likely to appeal to anyone under 18 or that link gambling to "seduction, sexual success or enhanced attractiveness" also are prohibited.

Research Shows: Companies with women in leadership positions post better results.

Private companies and government entities are losing by not offering many women opportunity to serve at various leadership positions, a new survey documents.
Research commissioned by McKinsey found out that companies with greater share of women on their boards of directors and executives for instance tend to perform better financially.
It says the earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) margin of those institutions with at least a quarter share of women on their boards perform on average 20 percent higher than the industry average.

In the private sector at executive committee level, African women hold 23 percent of positions, compared with a global average of 20 percent. At Chief Executive Officer Level, they hold 5 percent of positions, compared with 4 percent globally, making Africa the top-performing region alongside the United States.
At board level, African women hold 14 percent of seats compared with a global average of 13 percent.
“Although the number of women in leadership positions may have risen, women do not necessarily have greater power. In the private sector, more than half of senior women occupy staff roles rather than the line roles from which promotion to CEO typically comes,” it says.
“In the public sector, approximately half of women cabinet ministers hold social welfare portfolios, with arguably limited political influence, that do not open doors to top leadership roles. Indeed, the increase in women’s share of cabinet roles appears to come more from the creation of new social welfare portfolios than from any real redistribution of power.”
The report provides results from surveys done in 55 companies based in Africa, interviews with 35 African women leaders and an analysis of the financial performance of 210 traded African companies.
It captured Kenya, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt
Women leaders with whom the researchers spoke to stress how the benefits of diversity extend to areas such as risk management, decision-making, and board dynamics – all of which can have an impact on financial performance.
Companies with a greater number of women in leadership positions tend to manage risk better – they are less likely to overpay when they make acquisitions, for example.  And women leaders help companies relate to their customers better, as a company with greater gender diversity is better positioned to understand the needs of its female customers. With respect to consumer goods, for example, women directly influence 70 to 80 percent of global spending.
“Women can also bring different ways of working to management teams that enhance decision-making. These include openness to new perspectives, collaboration and inclusiveness and strength in ethics and fairness,” it says.
The report however consistently shows that based on its findings, countries around Africa are placing more importance on women leadership than the rest of the world.
In the private sector, the continent has the second highest representation of women in senior management positions than everyone else. The European Union is tops, with women holding 26 per cent of executive committee positions. Asia, Latin America and the US lag behind with percentages dropping into the mid to high teens.
Ultimately, regions in Africa are ranked with Southern Africa beating its neighbors with the highest representation of women in senior management positions:
    1. Southern Africa: women make up 20 per cent of senior management positions.
    2. East Africa: 16 per cent
    3. West Africa: 11 per cent,
    4. North Africa: 9 per cent.
The results show more women have a shot at reaching this level in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, while only 9 per cent of African women will reach senior positions in heavy industry. Despite the representation of women in various industries, none of the seven industries mentioned have a 50 per cent representation of women, meaning they are still male-dominated.

Technology Brings in A Mobile Phone Health Saving Plan in Kenya

Half of Kenyans have no health insurance or access to mechanisms to pay for basic healthcare.

In Kenya nearly half of all healthcare expenditures are paid for out-of-pocket.
The burden is carried by low income Kenyans, with poor mothers and young children being particularly vulnerable. So for most Kenyans a trip to the Doctor can create a real financial strain. And it can have a knock-on effect on employment, even leading to some opting to sell some of their belongings just to pay for basic care.
In what has been crafted to change this trend, CarePay, PharmAccess and Safaricom have joined hands to come with a mobile wallet which allow users to send, save and receive funds to access healthcare services using their mobile phones.
“M-TIBA as it is known is a simple and powerful tool for healthcare savings, payments and bonus schemes. This combined offering has been really popular with Nairobians. And each week we are adding more clinics in more areas, so more Kenyans can take control of their healthcare,” says Michiel Slootweg, CEO, CarePay
To encourage healthcare savings, the Pfizer Foundation is funding the first M-TIBA bonus scheme. This sees the first 100,000 users – who register and deposit Shs 100 or more per month – receiving a monthly bonus amount of Shs 50 for up to 12 months. UAP Insurance is also offering them 12 months personal accident cover for the principal member and one spouse, up to the value of Shs 8,000.
Funds on M-TIBA can only be used at one of the selected healthcare providers, who form part of the M-TIBA network. PharmAccess works with these clinics and hospitals to improve standards and business management. And they sign up to internationally recognized ‘SafeCare’ standards, which aim to ensure better quality and patient safety.
“To truly improve healthcare inclusion, we obviously need to help customers save and pay for healthcare. At the same time we must work to improve standards and services in those clinics and hospitals that display the M-TIBA sign,” says Millicent Olulo, Country Director PharmAccess Foundation.
The 60 M-TIBA healthcare providers in Nairobi have been activated from the 2,000 healthcare facilities nationwide, which are contracted to CarePay. In the coming months M-TIBA will be rolled out to hundreds more healthcare facilities nationwide, serving all income groups.
In September 2016, CarePay and Safaricom activated the option to ‘send money’ to M-TIBA. This enables people to send healthcare funds from their own M-PESA accounts to the M-TIBA accounts of others, such as household staff or relatives.
Michiel Slootweg says, “M-TIBA allows individuals and organizations to distribute funds for healthcare to people who rely on them. They can be sure that those funds will be used for healthcare only. And they know that their dependents are being treated at clinics that charge fair prices and follow internationally recognized quality standards,” says Slootweg.
Nearly half of all healthcare expenditure in Kenya is currently paid out-of-pocket. This means many Kenyans have no health insurance or access to mechanisms that pay for basic healthcare. This is a burden on low-income homes, with mothers and young children being particularly vulnerable.
Users can be registered on M-TIBA through an M-TIBA agent, or self-register by dialing *253# on their mobile phones. The customer care center can be reached by calling toll-free on 0800 721253.

    Comedian Teacher Wanjiku is back

It seems to be the season of comebacks and Teacher Wanjiku is not one to be left behind. After leaving Churchill Show unceremoniously and briefly attempting to start her own, Teacher Wanjiku’s hiatus left many Kenyans wondering what happened to the one time funniest Kenyan stand-up comedian.
She kicked off her comeback tour last Friday with a one-man show at the Kenya National Theatre.
Although the show was a resounding success, her return begs a lot of questions. In this Nairobi News exclusive we sought to clear the air.
Nairobi News: Now that you are back, are you planning to reclaim your spot on TV?
Teacher Wanjiku: No. I am not planning to go back to TV. I want to tour all the major Kenyan towns with my show, The 11 Commandment, then go to the (United) States.
NN: Why don’t you want to go back to TV?
TW: Every comedian dreams of doing a one-man show, but in Kenya we focus too much on TV and adverts. Our core business is to make people laugh; we are performers not MC to usher in artistes. Doing a one-man show enables me to do that.
    NN: So, where were you?
TW: My first pregnancy was hectic, I was still hustling so I had to work throughout. So, this time I took time off to have my baby and take care of my family.
NN: What do you say to your critics who think you left because you lost relevance?
TW: When you are at the peak of your career, there is a danger of giving people too much, when you take a break you give them a chance to miss you. I was beginning to be predictable, and as an experienced performer, I knew it was time to take a break. I just came back and I already have a deal with Bata so I am not doing too bad. My show was a success and we are already planning for the next one.
NN: What’s your advice to upcoming comedians?
TW: Build a firm foundation, establish a fun base that will remember when you are gone. You need to take a break every now and then, but if you are memorable then people will always remember you. Most comedians don’t have the guts to leave, that is why they dry up. Let’s also stop putting each other down, we all take different paths to the top. Just because you have achieved what I haven’t doesn’t mean you are better than me.

Hillary Clinton says she’s 'confident' new emails will not change initial FBI probe

Hillary Clinton said Friday she was "confident" that the FBI's review of newly discovered emails related to her use of a private server will not change the bureau's original conclusion that she should not face charges.
"The American people deserve to get the full and complete facts immediately," said Clinton, the Democratic presidential frontrunner, in her first comments since the bombshell announcement that the FBI would revisit the matter.
"It's imperative that the bureau explain this issue in question, whatever it is, without any delay," she added at a quickly arranged yet brief press conference in Iowa's state capital Des Moines.
FBI director James Comey, who announced the move Friday in a letter to lawmakers, "has said he doesn't know whether the emails referenced in his letter are significant or not," she said.
"I'm confident (that) whatever they are will not change the conclusion reached in July."
"We are 11 days out from, perhaps, the most important national election of our lifetime," said Clinton.
"We don't know the facts, which is why we are calling on the FBI to release all the information that it has," said Clinton.
According to the New York Times, the newly discovered mails emerged after agents seized electronic devices used by Clinton's closest aide, Huma Abedin, and her husband, Anthony Weiner.
Weiner — a former Democratic congressman who resigned in 2011 after he was exposed for sending explicit online messages — is now under FBI investigation over allegations that he sent sexual messages to a 15-year-old girl.
According to NBC News, the emails were sent by Abedin to Clinton from a laptop belonging to Weiner.
"We have heard these rumors. We don't know what to believe. I'm sure there will be even more rumors," Clinton said when asked about the reports.
"That's why it is incumbent upon the FBI to tell us what they're talking about."

A Fedex Plane on Fire at Florida Airport

A FedEx plane caught fire Friday evening while landing at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, authorities said. The plane was arriving from Memphis shortly before 6 p.m. when the fire broke out, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles. The pilots told authorities they believe the left landing gear collapsed on the runway. Both pilots escaped without injury. The fire, which was contained to the left wing and fuel tank, was put out within minutes of the landing, Jachles said. An inspection determined that the cargo appeared to be undamaged. Air traffic controllers in Fort Lauderdale issued a ground stop after the flight, and no flights were allowed to leave for a time. The airport's south runway reopened about 7 p.m., but the north runway remained closed for investigation. FedEx issued a statement that the company was cooperating with authorities. The National Transportation Safety Board is opening an investigation into a FedEx plane that caught fire after its landing gear collapsed. Christopher O'Neill, a spokesman for the board, said a team of five investigators are being sent to Fort Lauderdale. Earlier Friday, eight people reported minor injuries after an American Airlines aircraft caught fire at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

The third company, Medafrica, is said to have received Ksh34 million to supply unknown goods to the Ministry of Health. A leaked internal audit report says the theft involved payments of millions of shillings to phony suppliers in the financial year 2015/2016. The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission alongside the Ministry of Health have now set up special teams to investigate the alleged loss, saying that their report will be released in 30 days.

Gospel Artist Bahati wants Willy Pozze to show him how to slide The DM

Bahati is among the youngest artistes in the industry and is definitely giving his peers a run for their money. At such a tender age, he has achieved so much with regards to his musical career.
He has won awards for his good work and has also engaged himself in different projects; you can call it giving back to the community. He has even adopted two kids whom he adores and doesn’t shy away from showing them to the public. His lifestyle is rather interesting as he is quite stylish and drives a German engine.
But with all his achievements, he has found himself involved in some silly beef. A few months ago he and fellow gospel artiste Willy Paul were the talk of town after shenanigans became public leaving all of us feeling some type of way. It was more like a pointing fingers kinda situation. But they later on settled their issues (we tend to believe it’s true and not a public stunt). Bahati and Willy have been spotted hanging out together after fixing their broken bridge.
Well, Bahati is now comfortable enough to ask Willy Paul to give him a few tricks to getting a chic; more like sliding in the DM. But apart from that, he celebrated him for being an exceptional artiste. He said, “Today am happy to Celebrate My Big Bro Willy Paul who came into the Music Ministry more than 2 years before me. Amenifunza Vitu mob sana Amebakisha tuu Kunishow Kiswahili Ye Hutumia kwa Waremboo.
But am Coming Big Up for the Contribution You’ve made into the Gospel industry You’re Just Funny. I LOVE YOU BIG BRO. Respect"

Tony Blaire`s stay in the EU must remain an option.

Staying in the European Union must remain an option as the "catastrophic" realities of cutting ties with Brussels take hold, Tony Blair has said. The former prime minister has issued a rallying cry to those who voted to stay in June's referendum, telling them, "we're the insurgents now". Mr Blair said the will of the people should be respected, but insisted Remain voters "have to believe in the people's innate sense, that they're also open to a better argument in the light of the facts as they come to light". :: Sky Views: We're staying in the Customs Union, and here's why Writing in the New European newspaper, he urged Remain voters to mobilise and organise to "prise apart the alliance which gave us Brexit" and insisted that, as the "catastrophic" realities of leaving become apparent, staying in must remain on the table. Mr Blair said the sharp fall in the pound was a "negative prediction about our economic future", and the blocking of a Canada-EU free trade deal by a regional parliament in Belgium - a dispute that has since been resolved - as evidence Brexit may not take the form many Leave voters had envisaged. He said: "The issue is not whether we ignore the will of the people, but whether, as information becomes available, and facts take the place of claims, the 'will' of the people shifts. "Maybe it won't, in which case people like me will have to accept it.

"But surely we are entitled to try to persuade, to make the argument, and not to be whipped into line to support a decision we genuinely believe is a catastrophe for the country we love."
Has Britain left the EU yet? The ex-PM said Remain voters must win the argument that staying in the EU should remain an option, warning that anger and anxiety about immigration, globalisation, stagnant incomes, housing and squeezed public services will only worsen if we sever ties with Brussels. "Right now there is one point and one point only to win: we should keep every option open," Mr Blair wrote. "That this should even be contentious speaks loudly about how much those of us - and after all we were 16 million people - who believe Britain's future lies within the European partnership, have been shoved on to the defensive. "We have to respect that people voted as they did. But we have to believe in the people's innate sense, that they're also open to a better argument in the light of the facts as they come to light. "We have to recognise we're the insurgents now. We have to build the capability to mobilise and to organise.

Experts Uncover Hidden Layer of Jesus` Tomb Site

In the innermost chamber of the site said to be the tomb of Jesus, a restoration team has peeled away a marble layer for the first time in centuries in an effort to reach what it believes is the original rock surface where Jesus' body was laid.
Many historians have long believed that the original cave, identified a few centuries after Jesus' death as his tomb, was obliterated ages ago. But an archaeologist accompanying the restoration team said ground penetrating radar tests determined that cave walls are in fact standing — at a height of six feet and connected to bedrock — behind the marbled panels of the chamber at the center of Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre. "What was found," said National Geographic archaeologist Fredrik Hiebert, "is astonishing." The work is part of a historic renovation project to reinforce and preserve the Edicule, the chamber housing the cave where Jesus is said to have been entombed and resurrected. It is the centerpiece of one of Christianity's oldest churches and one of its most important shrines. "I usually spend my time in Tut's tomb," said Hiebert about the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun's burial site, "but this is more important." National Geographic is partnering with Greek restoration experts to document the work. A 12th-century building sitting on 4th-century remains, the Church of the Holy Sepluchre is the only place where six Christian denominations practice their faith at the same site. The Edicule was last restored in 1810 following a fire, and is in need of reinforcement after years of exposure to humidity and candle smoke. A hulking iron cage built around the Edicule by British authorities in 1947 for support still stands, but is not enough. Renovations at this holiest of spots require mutual agreement by the church's various custodians, and that is notoriously hard to secure. The denominations jealously guard different parts of the site and often object to even the slightest of changes. Last year, Israeli police briefly shut down the building after Israel's Antiquities Authority deemed it unsafe. It prompted the Christian denominations to green light the repairs, which began in June. Pilgrims line up throughout the day for the chance to crouch in the Edicule's tiny room.

They kneel before a white marble encasing, said to cover a surface hewn from the side of the limestone cave where Jesus' body was laid before his resurrection. Church officials closed the Edicule to pilgrims beginning Wednesday evening, and workers used a pulley to slide open the marble slab, in hopes of reaching the burial surface. Hiebert said the slab hadn't been removed since the year 1550. Underneath the marble was a layer of debris. By Thursday afternoon, workers had finished removing the debris, revealing something unexpected: another marble slab. Hiebert said he thinks the second slab, which is grey and features a small etching of a cross, dates to the 12th century. It is cracked down the middle, and underneath it is a whitish layer. "I don't believe ... that is the original rock," Hiebert said. "We still have more to go." The main Christian communities that govern the church have allowed the work crew only 60 hours to excavate the inner sanctum, Hiebert said. Experts are working day and night to reach the tomb's core and to analyze it. "We will close the tomb after we document it," said Antonia Moropoulou, an architect at the National Technical University of Athens, which is supervising the renovation. The restoration team wants to tightly seal the core of the tomb before injecting parts of the shrine with mortar for reinforcement, so the material doesn't seep inside what is considered to be the holy rock. One part of the tomb will remain exposed. Experts on Thursday cut a rectangular window in one of the Edicule's marble walls, so pilgrims will be able to glimpse, for the first time, a part of the limestone wall thought to be the tomb of Jesus. David Grenier, secretary of a group that oversees Roman Catholic church properties in the Holy Land, stood with a few other Franciscan friars, watching the work crew in awe. "What happened here 2,000 years ago completely changed the history of the world," he said. "To be able to dig, let's say, to the rock where the body of Jesus was laid ... it's overwhelming joy." At one point, a National Geographic film crew documented the site as clergy burned incense around them in a daily church rite. After the film crew cleared out, a pair of clergymen in brown frocks, and an Israeli policeman stationed at the church to help keep the peace, clambered over a pile of work tools, electrical wires and a yellow hard hat on the Edicule floor to lean into the inner chamber and snap cell phone photos of the exposed tomb. "It's a historic moment, huh?" the policeman said.

Uncivilised person destroys Larry Madowo's profile on Wikipedia

Wikipedia is one of the world’s most trusted source of information. It hosts millions of profiles for companies and people with extensive information aggregated there. Did you know that almost anybody can edit a Wikipedia page? Today we noticed something weird in Larry Madowo’s profile on Wikipedia. His biography has been total messed to include some really bizarre story about his life.
    Here is what it said:
Larry Madowo (German: [ˈadɔlf ˈhɪtlɐ] ( listen); 20 April 1889 – 30 April 1945) was a Kenyan politician who was the leader of the Kazi Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei; NSDAP), Chancellor of Kenya from 1933 to 1945, and Lührer (“leader”) of Kazi Kenya from 1934 to 1945. As dictator of Kazi Kenya, he initiated World War II in Europe with the invasion of Poland in September 1939 and was a central figure of the Holocaust. Madowo was born in Uganda, then part of Uganda-Kenya, and raised near Tororo where he mined copper. He moved to Kenya in 1913 and was decorated during his service in the Girl Scout in World War I, selling cookies. He joined the Kenyan Workers’ Party, the precursor of the Kazi, in 1919 and became leader of the Kazi in 1921. In 1923, he attempted a coup in Kisumu to seize power of the Girl Guide Movement. The failed coup resulted in Madowo’s imprisonment, during which time he dictated the first volume of his autobiography and political manifesto Life as a Boy in the Girl Scout Movement. After his release in 1924, Madowo gained popular support by attacking the Treaty of Boy Scouts and promoting Pan-Girlscoutism and anti-Boyscoutism with charismatic oratory and Kazi propaganda. Madowo frequently denounced international boyscoutism as being part of The GirlScout conspiracy. Larry Madowo is currently a news anchor at NTV and the host of the #Trend Show which airs at 9.00pm on Fridays on the same channel.
