“Since meeting President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi in November 2014 – after Gor were crowned Kenya Premier League Champions –, good fortune has been my portion. He opened a myriad opportunities for me. I believe it is God who sent me to meet and interact with the Head of State,” he says.

After the meeting, in which he sang the Gor Mahia anthem to the president and handed him the club’s No. 1 Jersey, Uhuru directed that he be employed at Sports Kenya. Among Soja’s notable accomplishments since the surprise get-together is a newly-built two-bed-roomed stone house in Gem, Siaya County.

“Before I met the president, I didn’t know I would have such a house. Now, everyone treats me with respect and is ready to assist me because of my closeness to the Head of State. I thank the president for changing my life from a mere Gor Mahia fan to someone with a decent life,” Jaro Soja narrates.

The house, painted in green and white-the Green Army colours-replaces a humble mud-walled house he has called home for years.

He has now invited Uhuru for a house-warming party. “It would be unfair to celebrate alone without thinking about the guy who made me what I am today,” he told The Nairobian.

Asked if he would vote for Uhuru in this year’s general election, Soja sought to explain why the president stands out.

“When we met, the president liked me because of my love for my team Gor Mahia. He didn’t ask me which political party I belong to,” said Jaro.
