Aside from weekends, government holidays
and birthdays, some Kenyan women live for Valentine’s Day.
So do men, if you really think about it.
What’s not to love about Valz with all its overrateD flare?
Flowers, chocolate, wine, scotch, expensive
gifts like cars, wedding proposals?
Yap, all that sappy stuff.
So we can only imagine that on this one
day, where people can flaunt their significant others on all levels of tacky
and be celebrated for being romantic, Kenyans will NOT survive in these
countries on February 14.
Check them out:
1. Russia
In 2011, the governor to Belgorod province
banned Valentine’s Day to preserve spiritual security. He branded the
celebration an unhealthy foregin phenomenon that erodes moral values.
2. Malaysia
The ‘members’ day’ celebrations were banned
in Malaysia in 2012 because of the government did not want citizens getting too
close in proximity.
Anyone found celebrating it- including
hotel managers, staff- were arrested and fined or face a jail term of two
years.
Gifts that are very
popular during Valentines Day are also banned on this one day.
3. Indonesia
The lovers’ day was banned after
conservative Indonesians claimed Valentines is un-Islamic because it promotes
casual sex and too much alcohol consumption.
4. Pakistan
The country banned Valentines day on
February 14, 2017, with a court ruling it is illegal to observe the day.
The media was warned against publicizing
the day and citizens banned from observing a Western tradition that violated
Islamic teachings.
5. Iran
The country banned Valentine’s Day because
they consider it a decendant Western Custom.
Symbols of hearts, half hearts, red roses
and any related materials were banned and anyone found with them is arrested.
6. Saudi Arabia
The Kingdom’s religious police banned
Valentine’s Day, and men and women ordered to sit separately in restaurants to
prevent public displays of affections because it is taboo.
Anyone found disobeying these orders are
sentences to 39 years in prison as well as 4,500 lashes between a ‘disobedient’
couple.
Alcohol, red roses and dancing is also
banned on this day.
Sitting together is
banned during Valz.
7. India
The event is banned in India for promoting
Western values for promoting teen pregnancy and the idea of romance between
young people.
Otherwise, couples spotted together must
get married at that moment if they are in love. For this, a religious leader
will be provided to officiate the ceremony.
