- The 2017 general election is going to be a costly affair with the tax payer forced to dig deeper in his pocket
- The IEBC has revealed that the poll will require KSh 30 billion for it to be a success
The hotly contested 2017 general election will cost a whopping KSh 30 billion to be conducted successfully. The poll will also see at least 35,000 vehicles used to transport election materials including ballot papers to various polling stations in the country, the Nation reports.
The amount will go to ensure a credible poll free from malpractice as seen in 2013. The amount will also be used to procure voting material
Hundreds of electoral officers will also be involved in the process and trained beforehand for the tasking exercise which will see Kenyans engage in the most expensive and laborious election for the second time in history.
Kenyans will vote for the President, governors, senators, MPs including Women reps and MCAs during the poll.
According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO Ezra Chiloba, the body will also ensure it registers 22 million voters ahead of the polls to increase the numbers from the current 15.8 million.
“If you want a certain kind of election, you should be able to pay for it,” the CEO is quoted by the Nation.
While promising to deliver a credible election, Chiloba said the IEBC had learnt a vital lesson from the 2013 poll where BVR machines failed.
This led to a hue and cry from the opposition which said the vote had been stolen.
The 2017 election is pitting incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta of the Jubilee Party and his main opposition nemesis Raila Odinga of ODM.
Other leaders like governors and MCAs are fighting to retain the seats which have become highly lucrative with fat perks to go with.
